It’s Monday – a painful day for most people, yours truly included. Sometimes it is made even more painful as we remember just how much money we ended up spending over the weekend.

It’s one word that can make people cringe, angry and sad all at the same time, a rare occurrence indeed. There are plenty of reasons for this – people are told at work that their budgets are being cut, their ideas cannot be funded because they are not in the budget, and in our personal life, our budgets don’t usually quite match up to our desires.

Summertime finally seems to have arrived — flowers are in bloom, grass is growing, trees are budding, and temperatures are cracking the 80 degree line for the first time this year. With summertime come a lot of great activities and events — outdoor entertaining, travel, vacationing, and time with friends and family. These activities require a lot of work in sprucing up the house and yard, as well as a lot of exercising and grooming to prepare ourselves physically for the summertime season.

One thing that might be neglected is preparing ourselves financially for the summertime season, so let’s take a look at a few ways to make sure our personal finances are as ready for summer as the rest of us is!

1) Hydrate on a budget — brewing your own coffee and putting it into a thermos as well as trading bottled water for home filtered tap water can really help save during hot summer months.

2) Read smart — Most people have a little more time during the summer and want to read, so take advantage of the free reading materials available at the bookstore, the library, and online.

3) Switch your phone — while not specific to the summertime, switching to one of the many internet-based phone providers (Skype comes to mind) can save serious bucks and leave more room in the budget for R&R.
