Most people drive around the area focusing on the car in front of them. This isn't a bad thing, especially for bike commuters like me. While driving my bike to work, I have the opportunity to see some pretty cool things around me. Like the number of people who text while driving, police talking on their phones without hands-free devices, and Bald Eagles.
A few weeks ago I was crossing the Woodcliff Lake Reservoir and a Bald Eagle was chasing another hawk, trying to steal it's fish. When I arrived at work and told my colleagues, many were skeptical. Bald Eagles in this area? That can't be. So a few days later I got a very blurry photo of two of these national birds sitting on a tree limb. The picture was as blurry as a UFO sighting.
After that, a couple of my colleagues looked across the reservoir as they drove to work and spotted one. I was vindicated. Bald Eagles live in this area during the winter.
Yesterday I was by Oradell Reservoir, and while experimenting with a camera mount on my scope, was fortunate enough to get a couple of great photos of a Bald Eagle. This one is immature, not because it makes silly jokes, it's young and hasn't molted into its adult signature white and black feathers. Read about the experience on my blog, by clicking here.
Grab your binoculars, and take the kids out for a live nature show.

Nice photo! I've seen photos of the adults on the reservoir and further south on the Hackensack River, but none of the juveniles. Very impressive!

We have 4 regular immature eagles at the end of Grove Street. Sometimes they sit in the same tree. Of course I never have the right camera when this happens. Thanks!

I've been photographing 2 different breeding pairs and juveniles for the past few months from a nesting site in Ridgefield to fishing grounds in Hackensack. My Photos can be seen on my Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/willy.thompson/photos_albums
As of now,, I have 4 Eagle albums posted there and plan to add an additional album as soon as I get the shots I want from the Reservoir.
