Backyard Chickens part 6

Today I received the followng information: Certain council members, who I thought supported me, are satisfied with the Board of Health's decision. The boro attorney belives the decision of the Board is final and is not aware of any appeal process. Wednesday, March 7, is the next meeting of the Board of Health. I will be there to find out why I was denied and to ask them to reconsider. I plan to go door to door this weekend to collect signatures for a petition. My online petition is doing well but not reaching as many people as I had hoped. I find it hard to believe that, in America, a Board of Health can make decision and that the citizens have no means of appealing that decision. It seems to me the Board is taking the easy way out by doing nothing rather than following the lead of communities around this great nation and changing the current oridance to allow back yard chickens. I have posted many, many links to articles supporting this on my Facebook page New Milford Residents for Sustainability. I wonder if any of the Board or council members have even bothered to read these articles or do any research at all pertaining to this issue?

Why don't you move to a farm ? chickens????cageg!!!! you should be ashamed of yourself. An animal does not belong in a cage, that's why we buy cage free eggs.
Have you any idea what they step on? and what they peck? yes...their poop!!!! Do you bring the chicks to a butcher? or do you take care of it in your home? tell me there are no germs!!! You should think of healthy ways for the enviroment. You should follow the law of the town, and help New Milford be a better town, our taxes demand it, and now you want chickens??? it is CRUEL, to cage up, and no room to run around, would you like that for yourself?

I do not want to live on a farm. What I do want is to provide my family with fresh food produced in my own yard. This includes eggs, vegetables, and fruits. If you have read any of my other blogs you would know that I am raising the chickens only for eggs not for slaughter, which by the way is legal in New Milford. I am assuming you do not have fish or any other pets that surely would be happier living free. My chickens are very well cared for and have plenty of room to move around and even fly. Cage free does not mean that chickens are free to roam around other than inside a barn. Do you think conditions are any cleaner in a crowded barn than in my backyard coop? I cannot see how 6 chickens degrade New Milford in any way. Do you know it is perfectly legal to keep goats in town? Personaly, I like this town and would like to see it be more friendly towards people who want to be more sustainable. I don't see how the amount of taxes you pay has anything to do with this. Taxes pay for things like schools, police, and other essential services.

Cage free eggs.....Is that the same as organic? I don't buy "cage free eggs" because they are more expensive....Please correct me if I am wrong....

Denise,

Cage Free eggs come from chickens that, as the name implies, are raised in open areas. These open areas are often barns. Organic eggs come from chickens that are fed a certified organic diet. Organic eggs can come from caged chickens. The best, and most expensive, eggs come from free range pasture raised chickens. These eggs are upwards of $5 per dozen. Now that I think of it, the BEST eggs come from your own backyard!

Jeffrey, thanks for the info, actually I was trying to get an explanation from Rebecca & her post. I believe you when you say where the BEST eggs come from...Just like the best vegetables come from the backyard garden.

Jennifer...Would you explain your post to me?
