Dog Put Down After Juvenile Admits to Beating It

Juvenile admits to beating five pound Yorkshire Terrier; extensive injuries force Oradell Animal Hospital to put dog to sleep.

A male juvenile admitted to police that he beat his five pound Yorkshire Terrier with a kendo stick at his New Milford residence on Saturday.

Chief Frank Papapietro said that New Milford Police were called to a borough residence on Saturday at approximately 3pm on the report of an injured animal.

Lt. Kevin Kiene and P.O. George Herrero were dispatched and met by a male juvenile who took them to a second floor bedroom where Kiene and Herrero saw the animal. According to Papapietro, the officers discovered that the animal was having a seizure and noticed that one of its eyeballs was bulging from the socket.

Papapietro said that when questioned by police, the juvenile claimed that he had kicked the dog after the dog had bit him. Herrero transported the dog to the Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus for treatment.

Papapietro said that the juvenile later admitted to Lt. Kiene that he had used a kendo stick to strike the dog. A kendo stick is a wooden baton used in martial arts.

According to Papapietro, the Oradell Animal Hospital notified New Milford Police that they had to "put the dog down" due to its extensive injuries. The attending vet said that the dog's skull had been fractured.

Papapietro said that the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Animal Cruelty Task Force was notified and responded; they have taken jurisdiction over the investigation.

Charges against the juvenile are pending from the Prosecutor's office.

Isn't this the first sign of a serial killer? I hope that this juvenile is kept under watch by our police department. I also hope that there is an investigation to see if this juvenile had any other pets or if other pets in the area have disappeared or have been harmed. I am so outraged that this was done to a defenseless FIVE pound dog I could just scream.

Perhaps he should have his hands tied and canned 5 times for hitting the dog, one for each dollar it costs to put an animal to sleep, and 10 for being a moron.

This kid is a creep and should be subjected to a psychiatric review before being put into a juvenile detention home.

I don't care if he's a juvinile, they should put this punk's name in the paper. This is only the first step for someone like this. Parents have a right to know if there is someone out there that has the potential of doing harm to their children. The law needs to be stricter so that cowards like this are treated harshly. If anyone finds out 100% who this is, please let all the readers know. I certainly will.

Put him down! What a horrible thing to do...shouldn't kendo sticks be classified as a weapon? He knew what he was doing he should receive the same beating over and over ...what a better place than jail.

Almost every serial killer as a child has tortured or killed animals. This juvenile should get the same treatment that he gave to this poor, helpless animal. He knew what he was doing, yet he continued to beat his dog. If I were his parents I would not even want to live with him. No sympathy from me....he shoud get the same treatment that he gave his dog and his eyeball should be hanging from its socket! Or better yet, maybe he could be put down like the dog.

WTF is going on there? I hope they fracture the skull of the sick juvenile that did this to a defenseless 5 pound dog. This story makes me sick. I agree with Bobby (above) They should publish his name and he'll get what he deserves. Don't let me find out who this kid is.

UNREAL!!! I hope that kid and his PARENTS are fined up the ass for this!! NEVER allowed to have an animal or NEAR an animal again. I was working @ the hospital and saw this poor dog's injuries. They were far more extensive than this article can even describe in words. I myself wanted to beat this kid with his Kendo stick!! I just can't grasp what provokes a kid to hurt a 5lb yorkie with a stick for ANY reason... Which should be illegal to have in the first place! It just makes me SICK!!!! WTF???? The parents should be locked up!!! They should also be investigated for child abuse themselves bc their is obviously something MESSED up going on in that household.

This juvenile should be treated like a criminal cause he is. I would like to say he should be beat by a stick too but that would make me just as evil as he is. I do believe he should be arrested and tried as the criminal he is!

Let's hope that this little monster isn't enrolled in martial arts classes so he will have more ways to hurt living things! If I were his mother I would beat him for this atrocity!

From my experience, cruelty towards animals, especially by children, is a manifestation of severe mental illness. I question whether this was the first occasion. This illness only escalates as the child ages and proceeds from defenseless animals to defenseless people. Treatment is available but I know of no cure. Because of his age, the law protects his privacy but he could certainly be the boy next door. Be alert.

This boy clearly is exhibiting characteristics of a personality disorder. It is well known that animal cruelty is a precursory behavior for violent, antisocial behavior, including rape or murder. He should be treated as a psychiatric patient - not slapped on the wrist and recycled. Yes, there's criminality here, but the root issues have to also be addressed.

Juvenile detention centers have psychiatrists, and he can get his lithium there.. while away from the rest of society!

Without saying all of the horrible things that come to mind that this person deserves for his actions. I do want to mention that if leniency is show for this case, it will set a precedent for every animal abuse case after it. Don't make it look like a dogs life is worth a slap on the wrist and a few weeks detention. I'm sure the dog was wondering what it did that was so wrong when it was being beaten to death.

While I agree that the young child's actions are deplorable and that he should be punished for the deep harm that he has caused, I honestly am deplored by the extreme hatred and violence that many of the readers are exhibiting toward this child.

This young man could be any of your sons, brothers, nephews, etc. He clearly needs help and while his actions are monstrous, he is still a human being. Because, as some of you have mentioned, animal cruelty is often a sign for deep-rooted psychosis, this young man deserves to receive just treatment to learn from his mistake and become a functioning member of society. How is wishing this boy's skull to be beaten going to regain the life of this animal or to prevent others from further harming other animals?

To those of you who claimed he "knew better," unfortunately none of us are familiar with the child to be able to really assess whether or not he fully understood the severity of his actions at the time, especially if he does in fact have a mental illness.

People make mistakes and deserve the chance to learn and grow from them. Reform can happen if you are willing to invest in the betterment of our future. Otherwise you'll have plenty of full jail cells and cemeteries, yet even more harmful people still on the street.
