I agree with Paterson Farmers market - also a great cultural experience but be prepared for unfiltered, downscale non fancy truly ethnic atmosphere - so not for the fussy or intolerant ... seriously. Great place - careful on hot summer days as the odors can be pungent -- as a professionally trained chef I still go here a great deal. ABMA s is my regular go-to all year, but in growing season fantastic. Not all the produce is grown here however - but what they sell they know the sources and in summer many, if not most, are other NJ farms.

Don't forget Abma's Farm Market in Wyckoff, N.J... alot of their produce is grown right here on Mahwah Farm Preservation land.

I agree. Abma's farm market is tops in my book. Besides the home grown produce they have the best pies also.

Thank's John & Rex for mentioning us. Not sure why we didn't make Patch's list of Farmer's Markets. We grow 95 different varieties of produce all summer long! We are already picking strawberries, spring salad mix, baby lettuce, bibb, radishes and arrugula!

Farms View on Black Oak Ridge is the best farm around. Wayne doesn't need anything else. In a sad story, looks like DePiero's farm, one of the last surviving in Bergen County, is selling out to make room for a Super Wegman's. What a shame. Thank God for Farms View!

I like Demarest Farm in Hillsdale, and Stokes Farm in Old Tappan. Not many real working farms left - they are treasures! Sorry to see that DePiero's is selling out. Support the few real local farms that we have left.

I don't think that DePiero's is selling out. I read somewhere that they were selling a large amount of their farmland, nothing about the market itself.

Ramsey kept its farmer's market going all winter on Sundays in a school gym and it was fabulous. There's a hiatus before they reopen at the train station.

Midland Park had a farmer's market for the past two summers.

Ridgewood has the best wet mozzarella, they make it right there. Warm with a fresh tomatoe, fresh bread and some freh olives, unbelievable.

I vote for the Ridgewood Market -- it is smaller than some others but what they have is the absolute best! I went to Ramsey last summer and thought it was fun, but their mozzarella is not made on a truck right there as I order it! Ridgewood mozz is the BEST -- no contest. Ramsey was bigger but I didn't think there was anything there worth the trip from Ridgewood. And I am sure they feel the same way! It is just great that there are so many small local Farmers Markets in this area! I don't bother growing basil because it is so amazing at the Market!

In Europe the support local farmers movement has a marketing slogan: eat the scenery. Just think when you pass Abmas Farm or view It on Google Maps all that land built up with condos. Scary but true. And then we'll be buying apples and Luttice grown in China devised by mad scientists.

Bringing goods to a farmers market is not cheap btw. Ramsey and Suffern require "farmers market liability insurance" which costs between five and six hundred dollars per year.
There was a fish guy from Rhode Island at the Ramsey market he had "Rhode Island Clam Chowder" very expensive but................it was the best clam chowder....sorry I am getting all choked up......so good....

I have been to the Ramsey market only in the winter, but even its limited offerings made the Ridgewood one look like a lemonade stand. I bought incredible organic vegetables, organic herbs and spices, free-range chicken, fantastically fresh duck and chicken eggs, to-die-for homemade ravioli with a great variety of usual and unusual fillings (plus super sauce), and found wonderful gifts: beautiful handmade wool items from an alpaca farm, healthy dog treats in many flavors, toffee that was selected for gift bags at Sundance, soap pretty enough to frame, amazing cheese and fresh milk, cream, and ice cream from a dairy...even had knives sharpened on the spot. Learning from the email announcements what would be available each Sunday became a highlight of the week. Can't wait until the market reopens next month at the train station.

Agree ramsey has a bigger selection. I personally don't care for the carnival feel of it however with miscellaneous vendors there aside from the farms.

Interesting side affect of farmers markers per one of the notes above - some of us now dont bother with growing our own basil, parsley etc. I still grow many others since I use them all the time. Tomatoes no - farmers markets can't be beat for price vs effort at home.

I've been going to the one in River Vale for a long time now. I meet a friend of mine who comes in from Ridgewood and we have lunch and then we shop the market. We both like this one. The vendors are really nice and it has an amazing variety. This gets my vote--and has for years!

I am the pickle guy at the River Vale market. I have the most pickles out of all the pickle people. Right now we make 23 different kinds of pickles. The new ones for this year are Bacon flavored pickle and a Kiwi and mango pickle and many more. To many to list that is why River vale has the best market. The one in Fort Lee sucks, I can tell you that. Theres like two stands. If you want to support farms, go to Whole Foods or some other store that buys their food from local farmers.
