Public Service Electric and Gas has pulled its overhead repair crews off the streets overnight due to safety concerns, making it all but certain that no power restoration work would begin until Tuesday morning.
High winds are predicted to pose a major threat to the area starting around midnight with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph, said Bergen County emergency management director Dwane Razzetti. Gusts could reach 75 mph.
"The big event tonight is going to be wind," he said, adding that even the extreme gusts were lower than early forecasts. Work was not expected to resume until at least 8 a.m. Tuesday, he said.
In a statement Monday night, utility officials said flooding at power substations had caused widespread outages in the area.
"Flooding is affecting electrical substations in North Bergen (on the Hudson River,) Newark (on the Passaic River,) and Sewaren (on the Arthur Kill.) PSE&G is taking these stations out of service until the water recedes and we can safely re-energize the equipment. These stations serve a total of 70,000 customers. The utility will evaluate other substations affected by the storm surge and take appropriate action," the statement said.
Much of the county was without power late Monday.
PSE&G reported at least 120,000 customers, and as many as 200,000, in the dark in Bergen County alone.
Teaneck was one of the hardest hit towns, with most of town without power, officials said.
County police had pre-deployed water rescue teams to flood prone areas, according to Chief Brian Higgins.
County shelters at Bergen Community College and the Lyndhurst senior center were open.
Extreme winds knocked out power to thousands of homeowners in Ridgewood and Glen Rock.
Westwood and Englewood were among several towns to declare state of emergencies.

They always put forth a further away date rather than give you their earlier expected date which for some reason they couldn't meet causing an overload of repeated calls into their command center with customers yellng "but you said we'd have power!"

Why is it that Bogota always maintains power after these storms, including last year, but Teaneck always goes down for the count? Yes, Bogota is much smaller, and if size matters then it follows that the likelihood of near 100% power failure (Teaneck) is a function of the size of the town. Really? What exactly is it about nearby Bogota's power transformers that makes them essentially immune to these hurricanes? Do they take precautions that Teaneck always fails to make? Is it because Teaneck has more trees (not evident)? Teaneck is always a complete disaster in these crises and I question the leadership of this town.

my friends in Bogota have not had any power since 3pm Monday and don't expect to get it back for a few days. THey came here to charge up phones, have a hot meal, and watch some TV before heading back to their dark and cold house!

Caryn, if you took a walk early evening on Tuesday down DeGraw to the gas station on the corner of Palisades you would've seen a vast swath of Bogota partying it up, enjoying their electricity, and prancing about with the festive air of people who are relieved of school and work for the rest of the week (but with electricity). There wasn't one blip of Teaneck like that. Just like last year. So let's talk statistics. Care to make a bet on which town had a higher fraction of its residents without power beginning Monday night? I'll take Teaneck. Teaneck is always wrought with more chaos.

We live in Teaneck & our power went out about 6pm on the 29th & we just got our power back on after midnight on Nov. 5th. I'm so glad that all the business got there power back on & of course the Meadowlands had power for the Giants game. Then miraculously a few hours after the game we finally got power! Yeah right.
