Halloween will come to New Milford on Monday, Nov. 5, following an executive order issued by Governor Chris Christie Wednesday. Christie issued the order citing concerns that children could be endangered as they went from house-to-house negotiating downed power lines, trees and storm debris.

New Milford, along with River Edge, Oradell and Fort Lee, made the decision Tuesday to postpone Halloween until Saturday, Nov 3.

Officials felt that they couldn't wait until Christie made his decision on Oct. 31-- Halloween.

According to one official, "With schools closed on Halloween, we needed to make a decision prior to today so that kids weren't out first thing in the morning knocking on doors and walking on streets that are still very dangerous."

So many officials chose Saturday as the day to move Halloween to this year.

However, upon hearing Christie's executive order moving Halloween to Monday, Nov. 5, New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro, who is also head emergency management, said that New Milford would follow Christie's order so that there would be no confusion.

This is the second year in a row that Halloween in New Milford has been impacted by severe weather events. Last year, the October snowstorm  put a damper on Halloween with downed trees and wires, power outages and a curfew.
