Third Party Nominee Said His Ticket Can Beat 'Robamney' In Presidential Race

Libertarian vice presidential candidate Judge Jim Gray made a campaign stop in Mahwah Wednesday

Libertarian vice presidential candidate Jim Gray believes that he and presidential candidate, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, can beat the two major party candidates for president, he told a group of about two dozen students and residents at Ramapo College in Mahwah Wednesday morning.

Gray, a retired trial judge from Orange County Calif., told an interested audience that he feels two choices in a presidential election is not enough. He referred to Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney as “Robamney, because they are so similar to one another in so many ways.”

He outlined platforms at the Mahwah campaign stop that he said would be “revolutionary” if he and Johnson were elected:

  • Government regulation of marijuana – Gray argued the government should legalize, regulate and tax the sale of marijuana. He said he’d want marijuana to be “treated like alcohol. I don’t condone using any [illicit] drugs, but they are here. I think we need to stop moralizing this issue and start managing it,” he said. In response to an audience question, Gray said he is unsure if he would advocate for a similar policy toward other illegal drugs. “I would say to do this with marijuana first and go from there.”
  • Eliminate the income tax – Repealing the 16th Amendment is “not radical,” Gray said. “It would actually be going back to our roots, because before 1913 there was no income tax.” The candidate argued it would save the government money associated with keeping tax records and collecting taxes, save citizens money for the same reason, and remove a “competitive disadvantage” American goods have in the international market because they are taxed domestically before they are sold. That, he said, would be incentive for companies to engage in “reverse outsourcing.”
  • Reduce government spending by shrinking the federal government and eliminating departments – Gray said he and Johnson would present a budget to Congress that would propose cutting government spending by 43 percent in 2013. He said he’d ask for an audit of the federal government to see where expenses should be cut. Some suggestions he offered Wednesday were cuts in military spending by withdrawing troops from “non-threatening” countries, withdrawing from Afghanistan “now,” and reducing or eliminating the Departments of Education, Agriculture, Energy and Commerce.
  • Let parents make education decisions – Gray said he believes education decisions should be taken away from the federal government by giving parents a sort of educational stipend for their child, and having them decide which school to send their kids to with it. The increased competition among schools, he said, would lead to “excellence in education.”

Though Gray said he and Johnson have not yet received high enough percentage points in national polls to participate in upcoming candidate debates, he said he is running to win. “This could be the beginning of the end of a two-party system in America,” he said.

If you live in NJ, a vote for anyone but Obama means nothing in the electoral college math. So if you like Gary Johnson more than Mitt Romney - VOTE FOR HIM!

Obamney have deserted the American Dream A declaration is an affirmation. Independence means self-government. They could have called The Declaration of Independence, The Affirmation of Self-Government!

Gary Johnson and Judge Jim Gray are the only choice to Save the American Dream: Self-Government, freedom from big government tyranny and oppression.... and to Restore Justice, the guardian of Liberty! The people believe in self-government and self-medication.

>>Gary Johnson and Judge Jim Gray are the only choice to Save the American Dream:<< That's some dream to have pot and other drugs become more mainstream after these illegal substances already cause so much damage to the health of people. Eliminate federal income tax, well we already spend more than we take in, how does that help?

Ricky,

I suggest that you take a look at their positions. They are really worth the time to read.

As for pot - it's less addictive than 'alcohol', it's certainly less harmful than 'cigarettes'. Why not regulate and tax it? How many cigarette dealers do you see on street corners peddling to kids? That's what happening right now with the drug trade.

As for the elimination of the income tax - it's part of a broader scheme of a flat tax with a pre-bate to those who are poor to cover the increas in tax on necessitites. It's a non-regressive consumption tax instead of an unfair (and often cheated) income tax. Have you ever paid cash to not pay sales tax? Have you ever highered a babysitter and not given a 1099?

These are things that wouldn't be an issue with such a tax structure. I can understand skepticism. Check it out. The guy was a Governor of a border State and his VP candidate was a Judge with extensive experience with drug arrests and convictions.

They aren't dopey third parties - they should be listened to and allowed in the debates.

@ Keith: Actually, the black market trade for cigarettes, especially in NYC, is an industry in and of itself. It's not so far off to have 'someone on the corner' peddling cigarettes. Your neighborhood convenience store is probably selling a Lucy as I type.

@Tee Smith:
I fully understand the black market trade - but it's important to realize that those cigarettes are typically REAL cigarettes, minus the tax stamp. They come from other States, Indian Reservations, Europe, etc..., but they are PRODUCED in factories that are regulated and controlled - unless they are counterfeit, but that's not as large of an issue even in the black market. There are no such controls on pot production. It can be laced with anything from PCP to deadly pesticides.

If you are asking whether I'd rather deal with a (small) black market of legitimate pot vs. what we have now, I say bring on the black marketeers.

I believe that if the same amount of people that are paying close attention in 2012 were paying close attention in 2008 Obama would not have become president. We have to many voters voting with their emotions and not with their instincts. In order for Obama to make this Country the way he thinks it should be (because if he liked it he wouldn't want to transform it) the President believes that there needs to be collapses of different types not just financial but also a collapse of the human condition so he can get more people to become followers of his socialist framework. He mentions that there are some resrtictive measures that are in place that need to be changed ( like the constitution) which is preventing him from making the changes he see's necessary to create an outcome of fair and equal distribution. If he gets a second term, it will be the final nail in the coffin for all of us.Remeber what he said to the Russian Prime Minister,"Just give me a little time after the election then we can talk more about it". Iran and Russia And China have been working together to create a new world superpower, Look at how brazen the Iranian Navy has become, Any war we have with Iran you better know that they will be getting their arm from the Soviets and the China,

NONE of what you are saying is true. I'm a Republican (at least I used to be) and comprehend why Republicans do not want these absolutely needed changes. Republicans are primarily concerned about enhancing their own lives, Democrats are primarily concerned about improving their own lives in addition to everyone elses life along with them. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. This country's citizens have essentially been lied to since the days of Nixon for the advantage of a privileged class and corporate profit who think the common citizen is either stupid or gullible enough to be used. Why do you think there are people on government assistance, Medicare and social security, etc. who insist on voting Republican against their own personal interest. they have been duped to believing we Republicans will "take care of them" through trickle down approach? Granted I was one of those (Republicans), but I saw the light and realized how detrimental this type of philosophy is on this country. It's time government worked to benefit ALL people by ensuring equality of opportunities and available benefits. Time for stop the waste, the spending on phoney wars, and let US, The People!, benefit from OUR collective tax dollars. We need to stop corporations from running this government and let the people run it again. Unfortunately the change will take decades to correct past transgressions and this president (President Obama) was needed to start the ball rolling.

Yup, this is the type of Republican the party SHOULD have nominated and they would have had a batter chance at getting some crossover votes from Democrats. Even better would have been Jon Huntsman.

I'm just talking about popularity in general compared to Romney, not political philosophy. I believe Jon Huntsman would have definitely grabbed Democrat votes away from Obama, and Gary Johnson would (will) grab votes away from Romney. Let's not forget that Jon and Gary both entered the primary as republicans along with Romney despite their political differences. Either one of them would be a better republican candidate to attract base republican votes at this point in time IMO. Even Ron Paul would do better then Mitt is doing now I would imagine. I believe the Republican voters now feel they made a BIG mistake by running Mitt as I knew they did from the beginning. Remember what Ann Coulter first said about Romney in 2011, that if we run Mitt Romney we're going to lose. It's going to come true. For sure. He cannot be trusted, nor is he competent because of his constant filp flops, or even worthy of the position. I don't think of him as a "leader". Do you?

You mean four more years of murdering thousands of innocent people (including US citizens), even higher unemployment rates, and even more civil liberties being taken away? (Look up SEC 1021 of the NDAA and how Obama is fighting the injunction filed against it.)

Hey JP the Republicans have only been in power the last 1yr and 9 months in the Congress. the 2 years of screw ups occurred under the Democrats and I can not agree with you more that they screwed things up.

I stand corrected, last two years for sure, first two years for not supporting the Affordable Health Care Act. Basically no Republican support or compromise. It could have been so much better if they were honest and supported the very things THEY initiated, such as mandatory insurance for everyone. They were to busy blocking everything they could because of a minority president who IS going to change THEIR (greedy) way of life.

Gary Johnson is a good man and unlike obama or romney hes got nothing to hide. ask him for tax returns or college records and it wouldnt be a problem. if johnson got a national stage to present his ideas and compare himself to romney and obama everyone would see how much more qualified he is than the other two bafoons.

If the msm actually covered Johnson's (or Ron Paul's) candidacy and positions on the issues instead of talking as if there were only two candidates in this presidential race, Johnson would poll high enough to be in the debates. Why the black out? How about some professional journalist explain that? Who's paying off the "free" press?

I think that one of the problems at the beginning were that there were too many Republicans running (what did we have 7 or 8?) that some good people didn't have a proper chance to garner enough primary votes to get their percentages up enough to qualify for the debates. You had "major waste of time" candidates like Michelle Bachmann and Herman Cain, etc., taking up space and fan-based voters, and by the time those people dropped out it was much too late for Gary Johnson to make any headway. At least he's still around and people should definitely vote for him if they like him. Make it a three party race and give Romney something to actually fight for instead of trying to buy. Ron Paul is a whole other issue. Even the Republican Party is not going to let him get ahead.

JP, this isn't a random guy - he was a Republican GOVERNOR of a border State at a time when immigration was a major issue. He was KEPT OUT of the debates and the public eye intentionally.

He was in one of the debates when his share of voters got over 1%, the minimum they were using to choose who got in and who didn't. I don't recall if it was the CNN or Fox debate. Let me look. Ok, it was the Sep 22, 2011 debate by Fox news at the Orange County Convention Center. So no, your contention he was kept out on purpose is incorrect. He just isn't that popular among Republicans, if he were (a little) more popular he'd have been in all the debates like Ron Paul was.

JP, what are you smoking? Are you so full of Obama kool-aid that you are willing to do anything to get him re-elected?

It you ever went to a Tea Party meeting, you would see a lot of Libertarians there! Too many of us made the mistake of voting for Perot in 1992 (giving Clinton the White House) to make that mistake again. If Johnson wants to be President, let him prove his worth by participating in the Republican or Democratic primaries.

ps: Herman Cain was not a waste of time candidate. His 9-9-9 tax plan is a stroke of genius! While I would pay more taxes under it, I wouldn't mind because it would bring in massive amounts of currently untaxed money from the underground economy and repatriated corporate profits.

America needs a handyman to fix our problems. Governor Johnson built a business from the ground up to one of the largest in his state repairing homes. He was elected and REELECTED in a landslide vetoing more bills the other 49 Governors combined, over 750, with only 1 or 2 overridden. He ran surpluses while improving his state. Gary's common sense leadership is a message we need to hear on our debates. Call the Commission on Presidential Debates today at 202-872-1020
