Approximately 2,500 athletes from around the world competed in New York's first Ironman Championship Saturday, jumping into the Hudson to begin a 2.5-mile swim on the New Jersey side of the river, a 112-mile bike leg along the Palisades Parkway and a 26.2-mile run from Palisades State Park to Manhattan’s Riverside Park. The competition was marred by tragedy when an athlete died competing in the swim leg of the race.
