Darren Drake, President of the New Milford Board of Education is shown with Mike Pevny's brother (black shirt), and Michael and Dallas Pevny. Drake said that "the dinner is a fantastic event" and that he is "honored to be there to recognize Mike as both a coach and a teacher."

The Elks Hall was the scene of the annual Mike Pevny Benefit Dinner on Sunday afternoon. Mike, a beloved teacher and coach at New Milford High School, was only 34 at the time of his passing in 2004.

After his passing, students, teachers and administrators were determined to preserve the legacy of caring that Mike had established in his short time at the high school. The funds generated from the dinner, and other associated events, have enabled over $60,000 to be donated to help support existing scholarships. Eight new scholarships have been established with the proceeds of the dinner.

The dinner also paid tribute to the memory of Lauren Savino, a member of the Class of 2009, who was taken from New Milford at far too young an age.

Going through these pictures, reading the subcaptions -- so many givers and so much love! Darren, my handsome superstar friend, there when you need him. The McElroy family, pillars of our community. The Savinos, I went to school with Steve. What they and the Pevny family experienced you can’t ever adequately describe with words. I do not know the Pevnys or Dave Wilson, but I do now, thanks to Patch. New Milford has so much hometown beauty to it. We’re lucky.

I feel our loved ones are with us forever, still loving us … and every experience serves a purpose that we will discover more fully once we are divinely enlightened.
