Pedestrian Struck Crossing River Road

Injuries not considered life-threatening

A 56-year old man was struck by a car late Thursday afternoon while crossing River Road at Graphic Boulevard in front of the Woodcrest Health Center, police said.

"The pedestrian was struck as the driver was attempting to make a left turn onto River Road from Graphic," Chief Frank Papapietro told Patch.

According to Papapietro, the man was transported to Holy Name Medical Center with what appeared to be non-life threatening head injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

I was a witness to this accident. I saw the man crossing the street. He had plenty of time to get across. All of a sudden he was struck by a car and was lying on the ground lifeless. I honestly don't know how the driver didn't see him. After about 4 minutes the pedestrian started to move. Very upsetting to see something like that happen.

Hi Miriam:

I just wish there was a way the police could look into the driver's cell phone and see if he/she had been texting at the time of the accident. if so, I'd like to see that driver lose her/his license for maybe 3 years! along with a $5,000.00 fine.

If you are driving and texting, you deserve the punishment. PULL OVER and text all you want! Just don't text while driving! turn the stinking phone off while driving !

Scarey! I am trying to think of how many accidents have happened in that area in the past year. I recall another 50ish man getting striked by CVS/Shop Rite, the High School student at the intersection of Cooper and River, another woman by Hovanian School immediately following the Zoning Board Meeting, and now this one.. and this is just from what I recall reading! I am sure there are others that I am leaving out. Imagine how many more of these accidents we will be reading about if we have 221 apartments, 70,500 sq. ft. super Shop Rite, and a 4,300 sq ft. bank! SOD!!!!!

I too, have been thinking of all the recent accidents. The next thing my brain gets linked to is how many more will be happening if Hekemian gets his way...

SOD OUT!

I would like to see Chief Papapietro have a couple of N.M.'s finest (in civilian clothes) try to cross the street as they did in Dumont a few months back..
AND
issue summons' to the drivers who do not stop for them !

I cross that area almost every day. The danger is obvious and maybe 4 out of every 10 cars will stop to let a person pass. There is a school, senior home, major supermarket and Dunkin Donuts all within three blocks.

Maybe the Mayor can use her influence to get a County blinking amber/red light there.

I believe cell phone records can be looked at if there is an accident. I also think the immediate thought and connection to the Hekemain developement is a stretch. I agree with Jimmy that the police should possibly try to issue tickets to those that do not stop for pedestrians who are crossing within a marked crosswalk. If they are crossing will nilly then they have to own responsibility for putting themselves in danger.
