Man in Intensive Care After Being Struck by Car on Rt. 4

Paramus man was struck while crossing Route 4; investigation still ongoing

A 44-year-old Paramus man is currently in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center following Wednesday night's traffic accident on Rt. 4 near the River Edge/Paramus border.

According to River Edge Police Chief Thomas Cariddi, the incident occured around 9:12pm Wednesday when the pedestrian attempted to cross Rt. 4 from the eastbound side to the westbound side. Upon reaching the westbound side, he was struck by a vehicle and hit the windshield before being thrown to the ground.

"He was treated at the scene by members of the Paramus Emergency Medical Services and advance life support paramedics from Hackensack University Medical Center," Cariddi said. "As of this morning he is in the intensive care unit."

Witnesses to the accident reported that the pedestrian, wearing a black shirt and blue jeans, darted across lanes going from east to west on Rt. 4, according to Cariddi.

At the time of the accident, the right and center westbound lanes were closed near the Paramus border, causing heavy delays in the area.

At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver, although the investigation is still ongoing. The joint investigation includes officers from River Edge, Paramus, Bergen County Police and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

Hopefully he can get through this. As for <wearing a black shirt> at night and crossing the highway which is a dangerous move even if you're wearing reflective clothing from head to foot, well I don't get why a few people do this, I just don't get it.

People are really silly and think that they are invincible! What would possess a sane person to dash across a busy highway? And to boot, he had on dark clothing!

I have had people step in front of my car while driving because they were simply too lazy to use the crosswalk several feet away. Many times I do not allow them the leeway to continue crossing, especially when they are talking on their cell phone as I will tell them that they are stepping into traffic and to use the crosswalk. Walkers need to obey the rules of the road & should not think that they are entitled to cross the street whereever they please.

It's so sad for the guy who got hit, and especially for the person who hit him! Driving for that person will never be the same!:(

Note to pedestrians stop trusting drivers so much, why have faith in someone to stop in time. Even if you have the right of way guess what if the driver doesn't agree you will lose every time.

Unfortunately he was crossing illegally and did not have the right of way in this incident.
