New Milford Officials: Update In Sandy's Aftermath
Since most of the town, including Borough Hall, remains without power, Patch is in touch with Borough officials to keep New Milford Residents informed.
Borough Hall remains closed due to the power outage. Without power and phones, there is no way to connect to the internet, send out reverse 911 calls, or effectively communicate with the residents of New Milford to provide updates on what's going on in town in the wake of Sandy, Mayor Ann Subrizi told Patch.
However, officials want residents to know that all emergency services are in full operation and Borough Hall will re-open as soon as power has been restored.
"I want residents to know that our Police Department is fully staffed and on-call for any emergency," Subrizi said.
The Fire Department and Ambulance Corps are also fully staffed and on-call to respond to any emergency.
Subrizi reported that the DPW is fully staffed and working hard clearing all the debris from the streets and will continue to do so.
Regular trash collection is resumed. The next collection date for regular garbage will be Tuesday, November 6th.
"We are having trouble communicating with residents, but hope to be able to resume reverse 911 calls with general information asap," Subrizi said.

This statement was in the latest PSE&G email blast sent out at 8:50pm on 10/31:
""Our best forecast as of now is that we will have virtually all of our impacted customers restored to service within the next seven to 10 days. There may still be isolated pockets of customers who have individual flooding or downed line issues that may take slightly longer.""

They did warn us that for 10 days power may be out. I have 2 generators running in my house, one to power the fridge and the kitchen and lights and the other to power the rest of my house, including 3 TVs, 2 X-box, a DVD player and a multitude of lights. I have plenty of gas to last me at least 14 days with the generators running contiguously. I stocked up on plenty of food days before the storm. I ask my neighbors to please take the warnings seriously and prepare. Gas up your vehicles, batteries, food and get GAS GAS GAS as it becomes very scarce. My prayers to everyone.

Tony, that's great but there are many of us in apartments & condos that can't do generators. Some if us have no choice but to ride out the cold & darkness. So just because you are able to heat & power your house, don't make it like you're the only one who thought ahead. You're just lucky you're able to have those luxuries right now.

PSE&G was working around New Milford today and they are steadily trying to repower the town. The workers I spoke to asked for your patience because it is a slow process. Power has been restored at Borough Hall. Anyone else have their power restored?

As the town comes back on line, I would like to point out that most of our boro's official communication stream seems to be heavily technology based--reverse 911 calls, emails, text, Patch postings. The biggest problem is even if the government has the power to utilize these technologies, most if not all of the community they serve does not. I had no power until this weekend so my phone was not working (fiber optic service, not copper) and the cell service was spotty so I would not have been able to receive info via reverse 911.
There needs to be a better way to communicate information to the residents. And information NEEDS to be communicated freely to the residents. Might I suggest a very old fashioned way? Posting notices. Hear ye Hear ye. Post these written communications at the public buildings--the schools, post office, boro hall, library, senior center. At least one of these buildings is located within walking distance of residents (for the infirm, someone in their neighborhood could bring the info back to them). We know the schools are within walking distance--when I was a youngun, it was rare to see a parent dropping off a child in a vehicle.
