New Milford has subscribed to the service gov-interact to provide one-point interaction between police, fire, and the department of public works. Chief of Police and OEM Coordinator, Frank Papapietro, began looking into web-based services such as Nixle and gov-interact after Hurricane Irene. Since gov-interact currently handles New Milford's reverse 9-1-1 calls, it made sense to have them provide text and web notification to residents as well. The cost for this service is $3000 per year.
Publishing services, such as gov-interact, allow local government agencies to send messages to residents via phone text messages, email and web. Information is delivered almost instantly to a subscriber.
In addition to providing information during extreme weather events, many towns are using notification providers to help communicate to their residents local road closings, traffic alerts and crime information.
