Little League Opening Day is All About Community and Tradition
A tree is planted at the Little League field in memory of Melisa Sofia.
It was a spectacular day for New Milford's traditional Little League Opening Day ceremonies Saturday. Bright sunshine, warm weather and hundreds of little leaguers anxious to play ball.
It was also a day when the community came out to support the Sofia family whose 6 1/2-year-old daughter Melisa died in her sleep last June from myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. A tree was planted at the field in memory of Melisa. Robert Sofia, Melisa's brother, threw the first pitch.

If you attended the Little League's Opening Day on Saturday you witnessed what a great community New Milford is. Watching the Little Leaguers march by and and taking in a beautiful day consisting of baseball games, food, and family fun made me proud to call New Milford my hometown. The atmosphere brought me back many years when I was a child playing on this very field. Thank you for keeping that tradition alive. The ceremony on the field after the parade was first class. The Star Spangled Banner was sung beautifully, the countless volunteers were acknowledged and the touching tribute to Melisa Sofia was without compare. I wasn't able to remember the names of all the board members and volunteers, but on behalf of our great community thank you for all the time you put in to make this a wonderful and lasting experience for our children.

Tony I couldn't have said it any better. With the warm weather and all the baseball games going on you couldn't ask for more. In case people don't realize the little league is 100% volunteers and independent. No one gets paid and not one penny of the taxpayers money goes to this program. It gets me thinking. If they can run a successful program on their own why is the town paying a part-time recreation director almost $30,000 to run a program that is run poorly at best.

I agree with Tony's sentiment as well - proud to call New Milford my hometown after attending opening day on Saturday. Thank you to all the members of the Little League Board for the hard work that went into getting the season underway and for all the hard work that will no doubt be required through the summer until the baseball travel season ends. We have a great group of people involved in the organization - many behind the scenes who do what they can to make this organization a success.
