Hurricane Sandy Could Hit NJ Hard, Experts Say

Meteorologists fear impact may be felt up and down entire East Coast.

Meteorologists up and down the East Coast are now saying Hurricane Sandy, sitting over the Caribbean as of Thursday afternoon, could spawn a storm that devastates the mid-Atlantic region early next week.

As the storm glides up the East Coast, it could bring significant rain, wind and waves to the Northeast, according to the National Weather Service.

Hurricane Sandy is forecast to become a large coastal storm, and may affect the northern New Jersey area between Sunday and Tuesday, the National Weather Service is reporting.

The weather service wouldn’t commit to exact times or impacts, however, stating, “there remains quite a bit of uncertainty with the track and therefore with any actual impacts to our area at this time.”

Jersey Central Power & Light released a statement Thursday regarding Hurricane Sandy’s impact on the utility provider’s coverage area as well.

“As a precaution, JCP&L has placed employees on alert, and is prepared to mobilize employees and resources where needed if Hurricane Sandy develops into a threat to the region.”

From Sandy to “Frankenstorm”

Some government forecasters are predicting an unusual mix of a hurricane and winter storm, according to the Associated Press, and the worst of it could be focused around New York City and New Jersey.

Forecaster Jim Cisco said the storm's size impact may be felt from Florida to Maine, and inland to Ohio, according to the AP report.

Oh NJstorm, you're just a hater! Chris Christie is the best Governor this state has seen in many many years and is the only one who's managed to get our state out of the red. Whether he's in state or out of state, he cannot stop a Hurricane. Besides, that's what Lieutenant Governor's are for.
How quickly people forget our past two FAILED Democrat Governor's - McGreevy and Corzine - talk about a disgrace. These are two Governor's with their heads up their own butts and now Corzine is in hot water for losing Billions of dollars of his customers money - now that's someone to be proud of... Get real!! Don't even get me started on Obama who's been absent for the last four years... Romney/Ryan 2012

first of all i am not affiliated with any party. second of all i dont know where me asking if the NJ governor will be around during a possible NJ EMERGENCY turns into an Obama Romney thing. Third of all its hypocrites like you who made distant me from a republican party i used to proudly support. you guys make a big stink when obama campaigns instead of taking care of more important issues however its ok for christie to go around the nation campaigning for others and promoting himself instead of taking care of important issues in NJ. unlike you and many republicans and democrats i hold ALL my politicians to the same standards.

I wonder how many homes that are "under contract" for sale, will have the deals fall apart on them AFTER the storm hits??? Mortgage companies are first and foremost are going to want "re-inspections" on these homes before they lay out any money.. Currently between Wayne, Pompton Lakes and Little Falls there are over 30 homes in flood areas under contract...If the storm hits like they say it might...Oh well, say goodbye to about 20 of them

This is a handy link to look at the plots of the various models for this storm...
http://vmcluster.wright-weather.com/model_tracks.html
Under "Storm List" in the upper right click on "Atlantic: Hurricane Sandy

I just posted this in the other story...
In the last 24 hours the weather models have converged on a common solution, with the majority indicating that Sandy will phase or combine with what we would usually call a Nor'Easter, pulling Sandy's heavy moisture and winds inland. There's still some wiggle room as to where it will hit the coast, but any chance that this will move out to sea is disappearing fast. NWS says a 70% chance it hit somewhere between DelMarVa and Maine. Currently the model consensus brings the hybrid storm ashore on the NJ coast, which puts us in the area with the highest winds and heaviest rains. Stay tuned. Seriously.

This is no joke folks. I don't like weather hype, and I hope it doesn't happen, but there are forecasters who have talking about this kind of scenario for years and it has the potential to be the strongest storm most of us have ever seen in our lives.

For those with generators please take them outside now and test them. If they do not try and make the necessary repairs. Let the generators run for a good half an hour and be sure they are providing power. Don't wait until the power goes out to see if your generators works.

That's good advice Teaneck.

I have a brand new generator and I was planning to get it all ready to go, but I was still pondering whether to fill it and start it to test it. Since it's new it is likely to work, and if it doesn't work not sure the chances are good that I could fix it, and it's already too late to find another generator if I can't fix it.

I was out buying a sump pump at Home Depot last night (Thursday) in Bloomfield at 9:30pm and I was behind the guy who bought the last generator they had.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of an emergency generator. Portables may or may not get you through a storm provided you are at home when the outage occurs. We went with a propane “Generac” unit that kicks in automatically after 15 seconds and has power enough to keep our sump pumps, refrigerators, and main lighting operating. I recommend Chris Heil and Black River Electrical Contracting with offices in Hackettstown and Chester for installation and maintenance.

It would be REALLY helpful if the Township of West Orange cleaned up the leaves that have already been raked to the curbs, BEFORE the storm hits. The schedule posted on the Township website says they are supposed to be cleaned up on my street this week, but so far no signs of anyone. If some portion of the leaves are washed into the storm drains, there will be no where else for the water to go but into people's homes. The water table is already high and the ground is pretty well saturated due to the frequent rains we've had over the past several weeks.

As a college consultant, I just wanted to remind HS seniors who are applying to college for Nov 1 deadlines (EA, ED), that you can't "push the button" without electricity and internet. So try to get all questions answered by guidance counselors on Friday and push "submit" over the weekend before the storm hits!

Last year, the freak snowstorm created a problem for Nov. 1 applicants too. In fact, Northeast colleges extended deadlines because it was such a problem for applicants. We don't know what they will do this year, of course. So get ahead of the storm! Good luck, seniors!

We have a portable generator and a transfer box for the electricity to be switched over to its power if we lose it. Best money ever spent. All I have to do is roll the generator out, hook it to the house, start it, flip the switch and I have 10 circuits running, heat and all. Much more affordable than the whole house generators and we can still have what we need, cable/internet so hubby can work from home, lights, heat in the winter, sump pumps, fridges, etc. All can be done for approx.$ 2,000.00. Cheap price for comfort and safety in the long term.

Agreed, Scruffy. We had that done last year and it was money well spent. We have circuits for the fridge, water heater, furnace, sump pump, and one outlet into which we can plug a power strip and charge cell phones, laptops, etc. When we need to get hot water, we turn off the circuit for the fridge so we don't overload the generator. We used Toby's in Park Ridge to install. They did a great job.

What type of generator? (Brand info, specs) I suspect I will really regret not buying one after the last outage - we were out for both Irene and the Halloween storm, and I foolishly thought that was likely to be the last of it, as we don't usually lose power.

You can place an umbrella over the generator and I found a tent for it online which I am about to order. I got my generator at Lowe's it is a 5500 run watt, 8250 Peak.
Cost of approx 800.00. Well worth it. Sears and any good Hardware store also carry them. The twist lock cord is what you get with the hookup tot he house from any electrician when they install the transfer box.

THIS IS A BIG PART OF THE PROBLEM IN A STORM. TO MAN PEOPLE LET THEIR PROPERTY GO AND THINK NEIGHBORS ARE GOING TO CLEAN UP AFTER THEM. INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE @ FAULT THEY DON'T CHECK ON PEOPLE. Lack of power would be a disaster some-- myself included, because of the need for sump pumps to remediate rainwater. If you can remember way back to Irene last year, impassable roads and downed wires made it impractical to lounge at a Stratbucks even if you could find one that was open.

I have to have power for my sump pump or the basement would be a total loss. I also have an elderly mom who needs the heat if it gets too cold. I did however not mind the loss of tv and internet before I had the generator but frankly am loving the fact I will no longer miss out on it if we do lose power this time. The storm a few years ago I had to hand bail my sump pump well for almost 24 hours and I was exhausted and sore and so were my sons. Hubby is a medic so we have to be self sufficient without needing him in times of crisis.

Power went out at Morristown Memorial during Irene just before my 5 week old son was supposed to be prepped for emergency surgery. They have generators but they can't operate on backup power. I had settled in before Irene hit and I was prepared - but you can't foresee something like that. It's easy to take the availability of emergency services for granted. Power loss can make them unavailable when they're critically needed.
