GWB Suicides Reached Record in 2012

Last year also brought most suicide attempts, report says.

A record 18 people committed suicide last year in jumps from the George Washington Bridge, the New York Post reported Monday.

The number of attempted suicides also reached its highest level ever, the article said. Law enforcement sources told the Post 43 attempted suicides were reported in 2012.

Last year's suicides surpassed the 2010 record of 13 deaths, the newspaper reported.

Port Authority officials reportedly beefed up patrols on the bridge following a series of suicides in May.

What I have been saying all along...mental health has to be addressed and easily assessable to all who need it. Take the money Congress and Senate makes and give it to mental health help. Now THAT makes sense!

John Casey, do you have a reality problem, or do you not hear the news?! Think of all the mass killings of innocents we have had in America in the last decade and tell us how many of them were women?

I don't want to make light of a terrible situation, but I wonder how many did so after seeing their most recent E-Z Pass statement after the huge increases.

I think people have to be a little more despondent than that, but you know that, don't you? However, your ill attempt at a joke is sickening. If it were a family member of yours see how funny you'd think it is. Disgusting.

couldn't they put some sort of net around the bridge to avoid this or at least make it more difficult?

No point in destroying the beauty of the bridge with a net. If they want to kill themselves, they'll find another way.

If a person wants to kill themselves then they will find a way... A net may help people from falling as an accident.

It is very sad that such a beautiful bridge, symbol of progress and connectivity, is increasingly being viewed in light of the number of suicides that take place on it. I agree, more mental health care, more preventative measures, more care in general is needed.

I don't think it's just mental health. There have always been people with mental health issues, and actually the mental health was worse years ago and suicide is on the rise. I think a large portion of the problem is the economy, people have lost their jobs, their homes, etc. I think it's hopelessness and fear that they feel there's no way out or no hope in sight. Actually, very few "mentally ill" people turn to suicide, unless we count depression as mental illness.

Again, California leads the country and New York:
"Thirty-seven people killed themselves by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge in 2011, an increase from the past few years, said an organization pushing for the addition of a suicide barrier on the 75-year-old landmark.
Holmes said there were 32 Golden Gate Bridge suicides in 2010, 31 in 2009 and 34 in 2008. "

states with high govt. presence in our lives. govt. hurts, doesn't help. states with most restrictive gun laws have most gun deaths. we need a revolution so these govt. leeches live in fear, not hard-working citisens.

It is terrible but 18 people out of 20 million per year commuters doesn't seem to win the majority vote on any changes to the bridge and de beautifying it to prevent people from jumping off of it. Sorry but our if someone wants to jump they are going to do it somewhere else.

Watch "The Bridge". It's a documentary about the Golden Gate Bridge. The filmmaker filmed the bridge for an entire year - catching many suicides and attempts on camera. It also has the stories of those that jumped and their families. There was one kid that jumped and lived. He stated that the moment he let go was the exact moment he realized he wanted to live.

J, I heard about that movie. I saw a documentary with people who jumped from buildings and bridges and survived. They all said, "the moment they jumped they regretted it." What a horrible, scary, thought. I'd would have thought you'd go into shock and not be able to think at all, but it's not the case. Man, what a horrible way to go.

most suicide attempts are unsuccessful the 1st time. they try again and again.please don't insult intelligent suicidal people with ur uninformed rhetoric. some people want to die. why is it compassionate to kill an animal in pain, and not a human.?legalize suicide. people have a right to die with dignity. why is a persons right to control their body only apply to killing babies?

A sad fact...Doesn't matter how many nets are placed around a bridge, when someone is in that dark place in their minds they will find another way to commit suicide other than jumping off a bridge.

If it was not for the grace of God and the fact that I have to see God's face, I would have done the same. Some of the churches that I go to, are only there for the money. Because I am from the Island, I am treated like nothing. I am a citizen of the United States of America but the Christians in the church almost drove me to do the same. I love my life and want to see God's face. I want to have peace with Him forever and I also want to see my children make it through in life. That is why I am here today.

Lean not on the arm of flesh. The church will let you down every time. Always think of how your death would affect your children and never forget the love, hope, and grace that God gives you!

Hi Joaniejaye, I'm Patty. Your comment has me a little more than concerned. If you find yourself considering suicide, there is a hotline you can call. Google it for your area. I get angry at self-proclaimed christians who snub or mistreat others and I call them out in front of their peers. That's a good way to keep them from hurting you. If they are doing it to you, they are doing it to others. Go on FaceBook and search for people from your island. Connect with them in your city or county and ask about a loving church. Islanders need a small community of friends such as a church so you are not alone. Living just for your kids is not the answer. Think about being a strong, independent and happy role model ! May you walk in his loving light.

When a mentally ill person kills with a gun, the Left blames guns. When a mentally ill person jumps off a bridge, not one person blames the bridge. The bridge is no more guilty of the death than the gun -- both are inanimate objects. People kill, and people kill themselves.

The obsessive self-love and self-pleasuring generated in the "God-is-dead freedom" days of the 1960s is now bearing the fruit of self-hate and despair. Death is the result. Such a tragedy, and it is becoming systemic in American culture.

Bad analogy...The bridge only kills the person who jumps, not everyone who happens to be crossing it at the time.

The main reason why many people are comitting suicide is because they don't have God as number one in their lives. So, if you don'rt have Him as number one, there is no hope. He is the only One whom can give us that. When human been understands it, this planet will get better, people will be happy and we'll see a big change in our society and see the numbers of suicide decrese...because if we let God lives in our hearts, then we'll have love, peace, joy and happyness! I can tell you by my own experience. I went thru sooo much in my life and had more then enough reason to commit a suicide but, God helped me...because I alowed Him to do so and totally trusted on Him. Have your own experience with Him and you will see what I am talking about! Without Him, we are nothing!
I hope our society gets the point!
