New Milford Republicans hosts a Meet and Greet BBQ at Councilman Diego Robalino's home as a way for residents to get to know Council Candidates Howard Berner and Peter Rebsch.

The GOP officially kicked off their campaign Saturday with a barbecue on Boulevard hosted by Councilman Diego Robalino. Council President Howard Berner and his running mate, former councilman Peter Rebsch, are running for two open seats in November's election.

With good weather on their side, residents walked, drove and rode their bikes to the barbecue and talked about the state of the town with the candidates while enjoying hamburgers and hot dogs fresh off the grill.

Peter:

Sauerkraut does not go on a burger.

Best of luck to you and Howard on the world's most difficult ballot...

Well, New Milford's most difficult ballot to figure out anyway.

I have been very impressed with Peter Rebsch's comments and questions at the Board of Adjustment meetings. This is not an endorsement, just a comment. On the other hand Howard Berner seems to have decided that he will not recuse himself on the voting to rezone the water company property even though he said on the record in 2011 that he would. This indicates to me that he will not deal truthfully with the residents of New Milford. Maybe he'll surprise us and announce that he will recuse himself on July 23 when the M&C are scheduled to receive the planner's suggested changes to the zoning. If you care about the future of New Milford I urge you to attend that meeting and voice your opposition to this project. This is an election year and we can make a difference if we feel those who are supposed to work for us are insread working for an underhanded developer and a multinational corporation that cares only about its bottom line.

Miriam, if you would allow me to explain the issue with Howard Berner, I think it would clear up a lot of misinformation that is carried through this venue. Unfortunately when someone says something as a comment here, it does not necessarily mean it's factual. The reason Councilman Berner said that he may have to recuse himself from voting on the UW property at the time, was because as an employee of a real estate holding company, he was in direct conflict when his company had intentions of persuiing the purchase of that land. When they decided not to go ahead with purchasing that property, and Hekemian walked in, there was no longer a conflict. Quite simple really.
Rick, I call this hosting a campaign kick-off to a new season of elections. Not sure where the grand standing comes in, but there will be more Front Yard BBQ's coming to a neighborhood near you. Hope to see you there.

Councilman Robalino, I believe I was the fist to write a comment on the Patch about Berner's recusal. I also included the minutes from the July 25, 2011 M&C meeting. My comments were based off the comments that Berner himself made, making everything factual not made up as you may be implying. I always base my comments on the truth and when I'm wrong I admit to it. Now, Rebesch is a truthful guy but Berner is not. He campaigned in his rookie year on not developing this land and now he wants to compromise and rezone this property as commercial, those are facts.

I love to hear where you stand on rezoning this property. Are you for the Shop Rite moving along the river, adding traffic, pollution and making flooding worse in town? If you are, your days will probably be numbered too. Because everyday, we, SOD, gets more support from people that disagree with Berner and Subrizi's plan on this development and if you're on that bandwagon, you'll probably end up serving one term like they probably will.

People tell me all the time, I like NM or want to move NM because schools are good, it's a quite town, and it's not Bergenfield and better than Dumont. The development of this land will make us no different than those other towns and it's a step in the wrong direction. This is not about flooding, this about changing the character of the town forever.

SOD!

Is Councilman Berner unable to speak for himself? Hopefully his days are numbered. Pete Rebsch has my vote
