Students Inducted Into National Junior Honor Society
Sixth and seventh graders at David E. Owens Middle School Inducted into the Teresa M. Martin chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.
Nine sixth graders and two seventh graders were recently inducted into the Teresa M. Martin chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at David E. Owens Middle School.
The school chapter was named for Teresa M. Martin, an elementary principal and administrator for New Milford, in honor of her commitment and dedication to the children of New Milford.
The chapter was revived in 2009 and has since inducted 62 DEOMS students.
DEOMS Principal Whitney Perro said, "The new members will carry on the traditions of service and scholarship."
Prior to the ceremony, the DEOMS orchestra, under the direction of Mrs. Berenshtein, entertained the crowd. The ceremony began with the students entering, each carrying a single white rose, while the orchestra played.
Joining Perro in congratulating the students was Superintendent of Schools, Michael Polizzi. Five current members of the honor society performed the traditional candle lighting ceremony. Each candle represents one of the pillars of the National Junior Honor Society--scholarship, service, citizenship, character and leadership.
The evening concluded with a cheese and crackers reception for the inductees and their families.
