Borough Exploring Shared Property Maintenance Officer with River Edge

New Milford to explore the cost-saving benefits of sharing a Property Maintenance Officer with River Edge.

The Mayor and Council authorized the Borough Administrator to explore sharing a Property Maintenance Officer with River Edge, and possibly Oradell.

In an effort to save costs, the position of Property Maintenance Officer was eliminated approximately a year ago and the duties were distributed among the Building Department, Health Department, DPW, Zoning Officer and Police Department.

However, River Edge has recently reached out to New Milford to see if they would be interested in sharing the position with them. Officials from River Edge indicated that Oradell has also expressed interest in being a part of the agreement.

A Property Maintenance Officer ensures the removal of snow from sidewalks and on streets, sidewalk repairs, garbage violations, overgrown grass, commercial and residential property maintenance, construction debris, and other property violations. They also have the authority to issue summonses.

The Borough Administrator informed the Mayor and Council that the position was seasonal in nature. Approximately 15 to 20 hours would be needed during the summer months, but only 4 to 6 hours during the winter months.

The council requested further information detailing how this shared services agreement will work before making a determination.

Aren't the police authorized to issue summons for these types of violations? If so, this doesn't seem necessary.

So the Mayor finds this important to explore and not grants to buy the UW property. How about putting some time into giving us an idea of the ratable windfall that developing the property is supposed to bring. What a waste of time and money.

This one will be interesting. So many questions.

How will the salary/benefits division among the towns be? Oradell is the largest square mileage wise, River Edge the smallest. River Edge has a much larger commercial district than any of the towns. Who will be the ultimate authority he/she reports to?

Why does the responsibility have to be removed from the existing parties? Since their workload/responsibilities will be reduced, will they receive a reduction in pay/benefits? Will the DPW still receive their bounties if they turn residents/commercial property owners in for violations (such as unregistered cars, work being completed without permits, etc)?

Guess we'll have to get some more rateables to cover this new expense (salary, benefits, vehicle) Let's see, where is there someplace to build a big commercial monstrosity to raise tax money?

Seems to me there is, and has never been, enforcement. Why not give it a shot?

Sooooo, out of Nowhere - River Edge ( whose certain residents are very good contributors to the N.M. Dems) had a potential job {in and paid for by New Milford} for a R.E. attorney - which was dumped (by Democrat austin ashley ).

And now they have introduced the idea of us joining in with them for payment of a garbage cop. Wonder if that garbage cop will summons the N.M. Council President if she doesn't shovel HER River Edge business walkway?

Also, which town selects the attorney/ oops - garbage cop person? Will removing bird poop be a pre-requisite?

ahh, there's a whole bunch of things to have fun with - but I just wonder if the non-political, angelic, straight as an arrow, garbage cop will be given a list of houses to NOT summons........

Time will tell.
