Bill Would Encourage Businesses to Hire the Unemployed
District 38 Senator Bob Gordon co-introduces bill that would give a tax credit to small business owners who hire those out of work for 30 days or longer.
District 38 Senator Bob Gordon (D - Bergen and Passaic) has introduced legislation designed to help encourage small businesses to hire those who have been out of work for 30 days or longer by providing them with a credit on their payroll taxes.
Gordon and Senate President Steve Sweeney (D – Gloucester, Salem, Cumberland) introduced this bill, which is also known as the “New Jobs for New Jersey Tax Credit Program” last Friday, according to a statement from the New Jersey Senate Democrats.
Under the program any business that employs 100 or fewer full-time people would become eligible for a tax credit against either their corporate businesses or gross income tax, whichever applies to them, for each unemployed person they newly hire. This applies to anyone who has been unemployed for more than 30 days.
"Tax breaks won't lower unemployment if the people businesses are hiring to get a tax break already have jobs," said Gordon in a statement. "Unemployment won't go down unless businesses hire one of the many tremendously talented candidates who are currently unemployed. The jobless won't have optimism if they keep getting passed over time and again. This is truly about putting people back on the radar so they can get back into jobs and get a paycheck."
“It is important to note that ‘unemployed’ element of the bill. We want people moving off the unemployment rolls and we want to stimulate hiring among small businesses. Not only will this do something to reduce our 35 year high unemployment rate, but we specifically believe it can help reduce unemployment among those groups hardest hit, particularly women, the working poor, and minorities,” said Sweeney.

Companies hiring illegal aliens to do jobs that americans WILL do but lying through there teeth that they wont, might just start hiring the people that used to do these kind of jobs that is until about 2002 or so.

While I normally vote Republican I strongly applaud this legislation. It is refreshing to hear a Democrat who is NOT anti-business and sees the connection between tax and employment.
Thank you!!

What is the control in this bill. How do you prevent a company from hiring someone who is unemployed for greater than 30 days, and then firing them and hiring another, thereby getting more credits yet now the person is under the 30 day threshold? What other loop holes need to be closed in order.

As a former Fortune 500 executive I’ve hired hundreds of employees.
The key to getting hired whether there’s an opening or not is to customize your approach. If not, you won’t stand out or get an interview. So stop blasting out countless resumes. Most never make it through the automated screening process and even less make it into the hands of a real person in HR.
Your target is not HR! It's the hiring manager that matters most.
Companies hire people to solve problems (both positive and negative). Your ability to uncover your target employers problems and position yourself as the solution is what will get you hired even when there are no open postings.
