Bergen Gun Buyback Coming to New Milford
County offering up to $300 for firearms in April gun buyback
Officials will hold a gun buyback in April at locations across Bergen County, including at St. Matthew's in New Milford, the sheriff's office announced Thursday.
Funded through the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office by seized assets from criminal cases, the program will pay up to $300 for firearms and be offered at 11 houses of worship.
“Gun violence knows no bounds,” Sheriff Michael Saudino said in a statement. “Intentional violence and accidental discharges involving firearms can destroy families and communities. If we can take just one dangerous weapon out of our homes or off our streets, we can make Bergen County a safer place for all residents.”
Firearms experts from the sheriff's office will be on hand April 13 and 14 at the gun collection locations to help visitors complete paperwork and secure the firearms. Officials will also provide complimentary trigger locks and gun safety information.
Compensation will vary based on the type of firearm, the sheriff's office said. Officials will offer $20 for non-operational guns, $80 for rifles and shotguns, $100 for handguns and $300 for automatic assault weapons and machine guns.
The program will be Bergen County's second gun buyback, officials said. In 2010, the sheriff's office netted 708 firearms, including two assault weapons.
"All firearms should be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gun box, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which they are being transported. Ammunition should be transported in a separate container," the sheriff's office advised.
The schedule and list of collection sites is below. For more information, call the sheriff's community outreach unit at 201-336-3540.

OK all you New Milford gang bangers. Time to get all those machine guns and rocket launchers of our streets. I will finally sleep at night knowing all the criminals will hand in their guns.

I have an OLD World War Japanese rifle but it don't work. So I figure since my fists don't work as good as they used to, if some little thief breaks into my house I'll beat the s*** out of him with the butt of the rifle. So I think I'd rather have the rifle more that the 20 dollars. Besides if a thief breaks in, he'll grab the 20 dollars and then I'll be out a rifle and 20 bucks. So my old war relic can still hang on the wall....

What are the hours at the Police Dept. when you can pick up the forms for a rifle..

John, are you talking about a Japanese 6.5? Loong rifle and stock. I had two of them - one had been sporterized and about half the size of the original.

So who wants to stand outside and offer more than they are to anyone bringing by a working rifle or shotgun?

Gun buy back in Bergen County!?!?!?! What a joke! This is total theater for the clown in the sheriff's office to get some free political campaign exposure at taxpayer's expense. Yeah, guns are a real problem here in Bergen. I bet most guns sold back are antiques amd hand me downs from grampa. You are a waste, sheriff!!

John, NOT the most attractive rifle out there.
I still have a hard time accepting the AK 47 is better than our AR 15.
Lady asks a Texas Ranger why he carries a big ol' .45 caliber Peacemaker.
He responds by saying -- "because they don't make a.46 Caliber Ma'am."

Jimmy, the AK47 vs AR15 debate will go on forever. The AK is one of the most reliable, widely used firearms ever made. The AR is less reliable, if not properly maintained, but much more accurate. Probably best to have one of each.

Thanks Jeff:
I think it's the new M 40 maybe? - THAT is cool!
I do have great loyalty to my paper clips and rubber bands though.
Don't forget to stop by the parade tomorrow in Bergenfield. New Milford is marching in the parade for the first time. We'll step off by Radio Shack ish about 2:30PM. .
