New Milford's Auxiliary Police took their annual oaths of office at Monday's meeting of the Mayor and Council.

Auxiliary police is a volunteer program organized by emergency management and called to duty by the municipal police department. Auxiliary police officers (who are not paid) are under the direction of Police Chief Frank Papapietro when performing their duties, particularly in an emergency situation. New Milford's Auxiliary Police were especially vital during Superstorm Sandy and the floods that followed Hurricane Irene.

Police Chief Frank Papapietro told Patch that the services performed by the Auxiliary Police are invaluable.

"They are true professionals who can be relied on to assist in any emergency New Milford may face," Papapietro said.

"They have proven themselves time and again."
